Staying fit in Barcelona on a student budget
Updated on
The cheapest way to keep fit in Barcelona is to mix free outdoor facilities with a membership at a municipal sports centre (CEM) or at your university's sports service. The city runs more than 40 CEMs. Outdoors you'll find signposted calisthenics and running circuits, five urban sports parks and volleyball nets on the beach. If you study at UAB, the campus sports membership costs €13 a month for the 2026-2027 academic year.

Training outdoors for free
Calisthenics is the closest thing to a free gym. The city council has installed bars and outdoor equipment in parks and along avenues, open to anyone at any time of day. Of these, 36 circuits are designed mainly for older people, but there are general calisthenics structures too. A new one was finished in March 2026 in Parc del Guinardó, on the corner of Carrer de Florència and Carrer de Grècia, according to the Horta-Guinardó district (page in Spanish).
For running, there are 10 signposted circuits with marked distances. The handiest are the loop inside Parc de la Ciutadella (2,135 m) and the one around Montjuïc Castle (1,992 m). On the seafront, the Passeig Marítim circuit is 1,500 m. The longest follows Avinguda Diagonal from Francesc Macià to Parc de Cervantes: 3,530 m.
Skaters and BMX riders have five free urban sports parks. The two biggest are La Marina in Sants-Montjuïc and Mar Bella in Sant Martí.
The beach as your gym
Bogatell beach has volleyball courts and two table tennis tables. There's also a football pitch, basketball hoops and a fitness area. It's all free to use. In summer, go early.
Municipal sports centres (CEMs)
CEMs are the budget option when you need a pool or weights. According to the city's guide to municipal facilities, there are two ways in. A membership (abonament) means a monthly fee that covers most areas and many classes. A one-off entry lets you go once without signing up, if there's space.
There's no single price. Across the network there are around 200 different rates, including youth, family and unemployment rates. Each centre sets out its own (discount rates). Always ask for the youth rate before you sign. If you're aged 25 to 60 and unemployed, there are places with a 40% discount on the monthly fee for people registered on the Barcelona padró (you must go at least 4 times a month). Our paperwork guide explains how to register.
Your university's sports service
Before paying for a gym, check what your university offers.
- UAB: the Servei d'Activitat Física on the Bellaterra campus costs students €13 a month with no joining fee. You can also pay €156 for the whole year when you enrol, valid until 30 September 2027 (SAF prices, in Catalan).
- UB: Esports UB is in the Zona Universitària (Avinguda Diagonal 695-701), with football and rugby pitches, tennis and padel courts, a sports hall and a gym. There are memberships for UB students; check this year's rates on its website.
- UPC: it has its own sports hall on the Diagonal Nord campus and agreements with sports centres offering discounts to students and staff.
- UPF: UPF Esports runs university leagues. The calendar and sign-up details are on its website.
To get to Bellaterra or the Zona Universitària, the T-jove usually works out cheaper than single tickets if you go several times a week.
Fun runs and races
City races aren't free, but they're affordable and give you a reason to train. The city's events guide lists the Cursa de Bombers on 8 November 2026 (10 km, entry €16 to €20 depending on bib number, plus a booking fee). The year closes with the Cursa dels Nassos on 31 December (10 km and more than 15,000 places). It has sold out every year since 2019.
